Entry#4 Fast Food

Today's topic is fast food! To start off from my own personal experience my work environment is great, and I get along with my coworkers and managers which is very important. The only negative aspects of fast food are the customers, rush hours, and being short-staffed. Customers can be disrespectful and crazy. It's ridiculous how grown adults can be disrespectful to minors over small inconveniences.  They can also be very impatient. One time a lady got out of her car to yell at me because the line in the drive-through was not moving fast enough, however, we were short-staffed that day. It was unexpected but it makes me laugh because she got out of her car just to yell at me while waiting in line. Another time some customer displaced her anger at me because my coworker got her order wrong, and she threw her receipt at me. One thing I absolutely hate is being short-staffed. People just don't understand that it happens sometimes, and the pandemic negatively has influenced it as well. A few months back I went to my nearby Jack in the Box and only three boys were running the store. I literally felt so bad because I know what it's like to only have a few people working and having to do everything while having customers inside and outside the store. Obviously, fast food is not for everyone because you tend to run like headless chickens when going through rush hours and people are mean, so you definitely need to have thick skin.

  1. Customers can definitely be a handful to deal with. I work at Jimmy John's and the customers can be a handful. People automatically think we are and start asking for things like toasted sandwiches (literally against our rules to put anything other than bread in the oven) or ask for things not even on our menu. The other hard part is that when they don't tell the cashier their desired modifications so they will stare around the wall at us and bark out what they want at our line instead. Do agree with needing to like your staff and managers (part of the reason I'm changing stores).

  2. Hello Kareli. I strongly agree with your thoughts. Sometimes customers forget that we are people too. Although, I haven't experience fast food customers, I work at an office where people from the phone will definitely trow attitude and redness all the time.

  3. Hello Kareli! I have worked within the fast food industry before and I have had similar experiences to yours regarding customers and being short staffed. It is very stressful and I feel like there is just so much pressure put onto someone working within the fast food industry that no one talks about. I remember having to work longer shifts than usual due to being short staffed, especially on busy days because of last minute call outs.

  4. Hi Kareli! You bring up a great point about customers ruining job experiences. I've been looking to get my first job and right from the start I knew fast food was out of the question simply because of the patrons. From what I've seen and heard from others, it's a stressful environment and I know I wouldn't have half the patience these employees do. I'm really sorry you've had to put up with that, I commend anyone who has worked in the food industry.
